What is Fire |Classification of Fire |Type of Fire Extinguishers by Smart Safety Academy
What is
Fire?
Fire Triangle (Oxygen , Heat and Fuel ) |
Fire is an exothermic chemical chain reaction between heat,
fuel and oxygen. It’s produced large amount of Light, Smoke and heat during
burning process.
As per
Indian Standard Fire Mainly Classified in 5 classes (A, B, C, D, and E)
A
|
Fire Involving ordinary combustible material like
wood, Paper, Textiles, Fibers, and Vegetables etc.
|
B
|
Fire in Flammable liquids like oils, Grease,
solvents, Petroleum products, Paints etc.
|
C
|
Fire Involving gaseous substances such as LPG,
Butane, Propane, Acetylene, etc..
|
D
|
Fire Involving metals like magnesium, aluminum,
zinc, potassium, etc
|
E
|
Fire Involving electrical equipment.
|
As per
NFPA- 10 (National Fire Protection Association)-USA classifies fires and fire
extinguishers into the following 4 types:
A
|
Fires in ordinary combustible material such
as wood, Cloth, Paper, rubber and many plastics
|
B
|
Fire in flammable or combustible liquids,
Flammable gases, grease and similar
|
C
|
Fires in Live Electrical equipment
|
D
|
Fires in certain combustible metals such as Mg,
Ti, Zr, Na, & K
|
K
|
Fires involve cooking oils and fats.
|
As per UK
Standard, Fires are classified into five categories according to fuel type.
A
|
Solid Materials usually organic such as paper,
wood, coal and textiles,
|
B
|
Flammable liquids such as petrol, oil, and
solvents,
|
C
|
Gases, such as methane, propane, and acetylene
|
D
|
Metals, such as aluminum or magnesium
|
K
|
High temperature fats and oils such as cooking fat
|
NOTE: - There is no Class E fire. Class E fires avoided
because of Potential Confusion between class E and Electricity. Electricity is
not a fuel (its ignition source)
Now your confusion has been cleared am I right? All the
types of Fires as per IS, NFPA and UK classification given above, comparing and
learning something new.
Mode of
Action
Type of Mode of Action |
1. Cooling
action (It
is a process of removal of heat by applying water or sprinkling water on the
fire by types of methods. cools
the heat being produced in the fire to below ignition temperature.)
2.
Starvation (It is a process in which fuel has been removed or
Cut-off by any means of methods Starvation
is achieved by removal of the fuel burning in the fire. Any combustible
material can be removed or gas or fuel flows shut off.)
3 . Smothering(It is a process of removal of oxygen by excluding the oxygen in the surrounding atmosphere, the fire
will be extinguished. Smothering can be achieved by using sand, blanketing, and
foam application or by the use of chemical extinguishers.)
Type of Fire
Extinguishers ?
Types of Fire Extinguishers |
Statutory and other Standards that might be enforce by Government.
Section 38
of the Factory Act 1948 requires preventing outbreaks of fire and its spread,
both internally and externally and to provide and maintain
1. Safe means of
escape for all the persons in the event of fire and
2. The necessary
equipment and facilities for extinguishing Fire.
3. All worker must be
appropriate trained and competent.
